| Restless and sustainable transportation – September 21st, 2009
The Restless crew recently got invited to participate in a conference on sustainable means of transportation held by HEC, a world renowned business school. The idea was to introduce students to an alternative way to get to and from school. A long side such companies as Segway and Bixi, we set up a booth to give these ‘’soon to be business men’’ a chance to try out some of our products. This all seemed like a great opportunity to spread the Restless vibe and get some fresh faces to discover our passion.
I will applaud the organizers of the event for the noble idea and our provincial government for funding it. This is a great initiative… but they made one fundamental mistake: Choose your audience. Why would kids, who drive to school in their daddy’s new BMW, have the slightest interest in sustainable transportation? Apart from the odd student who took a wrong left looking for the restrooms, this conference was as deserted as the salad bar at a fat camp.
In a feeble attempt to generate some buzz and hopefully attract a few people, I was asked to longboard throughout the school. You didn’t have to ask me twice. I jumped all over the opportunity to cruise around the cafeteria, closely dodging students. But sadly, apart from a few dirty looks, nothing came out of it. I just passed as some other skater bum causing a ruckus. But don’t worry, we made sure to plaster the school with some left over Restless stickers before packing up for the day.
In the end, I got to enjoy the sun, talk to a hand full of students, try out a Segway, bomb down some hallways and got a free lunch. All in a day’s work.
Cheers,
Al |
